Go for: cream puffs, almond squares, turtles, and king cake.

Haydel’s Bakery started out as a mom and pop bakery not far from its current location about three generations ago. It has grown into a bakery now known internationally but has kept its roots as a family run business. There are usually one or two Haydel family members on premise at all times. They also hold the Guinness Book of World Records for the World’s Largest King Cake.

My first experience with this heaven on earth place was with their king cakes. You can get them plain or stuffed with a variety of flavors. I love them all. The drizzled icing on top makes this sugary confection one you should try any time of year.

Haydel’s Bakery has more than just king cakes, when you walk into the shop the sugary sensory overload just makes you smile. Friendly service allows you the time to pick out what you want from the petit fours and chocolate eclairs to the stuffed almond croissants and cupcakes. And if you are not sure what you should bring to a party, they are delighted to make suggestions. Sometimes, they have samples you can taste too. YUM!

They also create exquisite wedding cakes and fanciful groom’s cakes. Yes, in the South the groom gets a cake for the big day too. There is nothing too outrageous that they can put on top of a cake. You want a 3-D crawfish boil themed cake, Haydel’s can do it. I speak from experience on this one.

If you cannot get to the bakery, not to worry. They ship around the world. Try a King Cake during Mardi Gras or a Cajun Kringle at Christmas.
