GO FOR: Down home cooking, good service, great shrimp poboys.

Walk into Melba’s and wonder at all that’s going on.

This really is one of American’s busiest shops, and there is a hive of activity 24 hours a day, inside and out. Located on Elysian Fields, just a short walk from Crescent Park and the Mississippi River, Melba’s is also just minutes away from I-10, and I-610 — which makes it easy to get to from everywhere in town.

Ample parking in front and back, means there’s never an excuse to not stop in.

Plate lunches at a hot line, and poboys with all the fixings that’s the ticket here. Founded by Scott Wolfe Sr., Melba’s is just one of his many success stories. Scott and his family worked hard, saved plenty, and they give back to their community. For example, Melba’s is proud to partner with Pastor Corey Hick’s vision of rescuing New Orleans’ troubled youth, with the Eat Pray Love Foundation, and at Melba’s they hire neighborhood residents to tend the restaurant and the attached laundromat. Staff here are like family, and they’ll treat you as such.

Feeding a family, a large group, a convention, or a party? Melba’s has you covered. Call ahead (504) 267-7765 and place an order — from one person to 100, they can do the cooking.

Melba’s is the namesake of a now gone, but once cherished ice cream parlor, located just a short second line from here. I remember going to Melba’s as a little kid, and everything about that small store was a delight. The Wolfe’s and his team have recreated that magic, they tapped into history, and that community spirit and they’ve brought goodness to one of the most vital neighborhoods in New Orleans.

Look for the large sign at the corner of Elysian Fields and Claiborne.
