Go for: Great poboys, award-winning gumbo, excellent service.

At MJ’s Kitchen, you’ll find all the comforts of a friendly neighborhood poboy shop, with the high quality of a refined restaurant experience. When you think about that for a minute, it makes perfect sense …

MJ’s Kitchen is owned and operated by Chef Michael Mueller, and he’s a New Orleans boy, through-and-through.

Michael is a graduate of Holy Cross High School, and The University of New Orleans. He’s been running businesses and restaurants around the city for years, and even when those ventures took him outside of a kitchen, his love for hospitality and his people pleasing passion went with him.

MJ’s Kitchen is adjacent to Dixie Taverne and you can get MJ’s food in both spots, … day and night.

Prior to opening MJ’s Michael improved the already good dining experience at Canal Street Bistro. It was there he gave us a glimpse of what was on his mind. Canal Street Bistro is white table cloth dining, with a down home comfort level — and everything about it is great. MJ’s Kitchen is no table cloth dining, with an accentuated menu — and everything about it is great.

This place reminds me of the small restaurant Austin Leslie ran for a short time on Elysian Fields Ave. next to Ferrara’s Supermarket — where he plied daily standards mixed with delightful, upscale treats.

Come to MJ’s for delicious poboys served with ample amount of fillings on lightly toasted Leidenheimer french bread. Try the boudin balls, which come slightly larger than bite size, and pack an earthy smoked punch. Ask about the meat pies. They’re unique to the area, and seem to me like a cross between an empañada we might find at Central American café and our more common central and North Louisiana cousin.
