Go for: Carne asada, chicken tacos, quesadillas

Taqueria Corona is inexpensive, authentic Mexican food minus the grease.

An idea came to owner Roberto Mendez at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He wanted to bring tacos to the Jazzfest, and … that was more than 30 years ago. At that time, he was turned down. But his idea grew into not just selling tacos but to opening up a restaurant that used the freshest ingredients in all the dishes.

Open since 1988 — it has a loyal following with many regulars at all three locations. Come to Taqueria Corona and start with the pico de gallo, guacamole and queso fundido appetizer.

The tortilla chips are crisp and the house margarita is yummy too. While snacking on the appetizer, you can watch all the food being prepared in an open-air kitchen. Entrees range from grilled cebollitas and taco salad to enchiladas and burritos. After dinner, I am usually too full to think about dessert!

The ambiance of the restaurant is colorful, bright, very family friendly. When you enter the restaurant, someone always says welcome and have a seat. Prices are very reasonable. Service is excellent, and beers are always muy frío.

If you cannot make it out to Harahan (that one is my favorite), they do have two other locations – Uptown New Orleans on Magazine and Severn Ave in Metairie. And note: they’re now at Jazz Fest, too!– christine sory
