I call this place the hamburger hut, but it’s so much more than that.
Located on 4th Street in Westwego, it’s a step back in time, and a step into a time when home cooked food made with quality ingredients was simply the way things got done. And that’s still how they do things today at The Little Kitchen.
Slogan is: “Home of the Homemade.” – Ask them: Homemade what? The answer is … all of it. From pancakes and grits in the morning, to burgers, fries, and meatballs and spaghetti at lunch, they do it all, and they do it all very well.
My favorite is their hot dog and chili, but those burgers are juicy, hand made patties, on slightly toasted buns, and they’re as reliable as anything at one of the newer, fancier, and more expensive chain burger joints.
Looking for a super simple lunch, then just order up a grilled cheese. Want something more filling? Ask for the chicken fried steak, the hamburger steak, or the pork chop sandwich.
There’s crawfish pies and jalapeño poppers as appetizers, chili-cheese fries and nachos, too. I wish we had a Little Kitchen on the East Bank. No worries, just a quick hop over the Huey P., and you’re there — sitting down to a home cooked meal, in a simple setting, served by people who take pride in doing what they do, and doing it well.
For kids, there’s shakes and malts; sundaes and banana splits, too. Splurge, eat this hearty fare, then walk off the calories on the west bank Mississippi River levee, where you can look back across the city skyline. – scott mccrossen
